Inspector Piggy-Wiggy Enters the Scene of Crime
Inspektor Piggy-Wiggy wkracza na scenę zbrodni
by Ryszard Frelek
Yet another old book undeservedly forgotten...
In in an imaginary country (because neither criminality nor delinquency could possibly exist in Poland), there lives a famous detective fondly nicknamed Piggy-Wiggy. Even the criminals apprehended by him respect and even cherish him.
The cases investigated by the unsurpassable Inspector Piggy-Wiggy, a detective in retirement, a brainy investigator and a paragon husband, are strange and knotty cases indeed. But the Inspector will undoubtedly solve each and every of them. He is the very best! Besides, he can always count upon his prudent wife and his businesslike dachshund who will help him without fail. It is the wife that points out that thirteen missing wives of a certain fur farmer have not left their husband but have certainly been killed, as no woman leaving for good would ever leave her fur coat behind. It is thanks to the dog that the corpulent Inspector is physically and mentally fit: every morning, the industrious dachshund hides its Master`s bedroom-slippers in different places, so that the Master may take exercise looking for them. Fosters willpower, too. As per the rules set by the wife and the dog, the man must either find his slippers or go without breakfast.
The stories are rather of the Father Brown or Sherlock Holmes kind; no wild chases, no shooting, no Big Knockovers, all brainwork. Still, they capture...
What I like best about this particular book (not as obsolete as it might seem!) is the unobtrusive irony.
