In an old book titled written by a Daghestani poet Rasul Gamzatov and dedicated to his motherland, Dagesthan, there are lines that go, more or less, thus:
Protect me from drunkenness, since the tipsy see everything that`s good hundredfold better!
Protect me from sobriety too, since the sober see everything that`s bad hundredfold worse!
I`m not sure whether the lines belong to the author or to the lore of his country, but there`s a certain simple yet deep truth in them.
Only there`s nothing about them that see both good and bad as awful bad everywhere except within themselves. According to my experience, and that of quite a few others, the Righteous Teetotalers will see nothing but Evil around them.
And I say unto you: be sober or be drunk, but do not be Teetotal. Shun the Righteous, lest you be trampled by them, or, worse yet, catch it off them!
Seeing bad things worse than they really are or good things better than they really are is hundredfold better than seeing nothing but Evil around you a Saint...
And I say unto you: nobody but yourself has the right to decide whether you choose to be tipsy or sober at any instant of your time!
Bar when you are behind the wheel, of course...
